hit with the unthinkableI have prided myself on living a pretty healthy life style. I am a vibrant 42 year old mother of four, wife, nurse, studying to be a doula. I have so many things going on in my life to look forward to. Imagine my shock that I would get an upper respiratory infection that could change the course of my life forever. I knew I was very sick, I woke up one day with a fever and a very nasty cough. I am a very homeopathic kind of woman so I began to nurse myself, (also nurses are notorious  for being the worse patients on earth) as the days dragged on I began to feel worse and worse.

Two weeks out and I hadn’t gotten much better finally able to get up and move around but was getting short of breath. Then it happen, I started having chest pain. I was rushed to the hospital, it turns out at present that it is a possibility a virus has attacked my heart and I could be in mild heart failure. My cardiologist is working on a plan, I am now on medication and I have to tell you I have never needed medication. My blood pressure is wonderful, pulse of a runner, no cholesterol problems, nothing that would have contributed to heart disease.

So now they had strapped me with bed rest. What I can’t do this I am getting ready to finish my doula training to be certified, I am in the PTA, I am a wife, I am a mother… I can’t take time off to be sick. So I continue as I woke up this morning, I am always very excited like a child on Christmas morning when I get up each day, I mean I am living my own dream and possibly a life that some would envy. Hell I envy it.

So the fear that struck me as I was cooking breakfast.. ok I know I was supposed to be on bed rest.. but I assure you I check my oxygen, pulse and all other vitals I am fine.. anyway the fear froze me.. my mind was flooded with these awful maybe’s, what if it doesn’t go away, what if it gets worse, what if I have a blockage they arent seeing, what if it is damaged beyond repair.. this is my heart.. this is my life. So after I calmed myself I continued to do what I always do, take care of my family, my self, and my responsibilities and goals. I didn’t stop studying, or blogging, or working, or anything I was doing, did I want to pull the covers over my head and cry and give into the pity I was feeling? Yes I certainly did. But I fought the urge.

The cardiologist has now cleared me and  I have a doula workshop coming up and 2 scheduled births where I will be doing my internship, then I am done. I will did allow this thing to rob me of my future. I am however concerned and I will do what the doctor recommends but I am telling myself each day, you are healthy, vibrant, happy, blessed and your good health will return. I have too much to look forward to to let this steal my joy and life. Of course I have a plan in place financial, physical, health, family, career but I am not ever putting those in place until the doctor walks in and says throw them in place. But that isn’t going to happen not now anyway. This is why living a healthy life style is in my favor as well as yours. If I hadn’t been living a healthy life style I would have already lost my life… So I encourage all of you to live healthy, fully, and don’t do what I did please go to the doctor if your not feeling well after 3 days…. that was my bad…

So when you are hit with the unthinkable, have a plan in place already, who is taking care of what while you are out of commission, living will, financial plan, health plan, family plan, career plan, all those things have to be dealt with before the unthinkable happens. Then make your husband, children ,friends and family feel at ease. Keep them informed, follow dr orders, talk with them , reassure them, care for yourself, keep working toward your goals, even if you are not feeling well do it in increments that wont tire you out, keep your social circle intact, don’t look sick, drag  yourself up and put on your face like you do, do your hair, take your meds, eat, rest, talk about it to someone outside your family, think positive, meditate, and keep living life as your normal as possible, keep medication bottles, medical supplies out of sight, out of mind, pray to your God, write in a journal, do what ever it is that makes this easier for you and your loved ones. Be safe, live simple, live free, and live in peace…

30 minutes a day to a healthier Mommy.

Simply Mommys 30 min to a healthier youNo one really wants to work out. I know when I have to drag my butt up and do it, I am dreading it so bad. But I have simplified a work out centered around my busy Simply Mommy life that is easy to stick to. At first there was a lot of procrastination, complaining and sore muscles, but the results are amazing. 

It is 30 minutes a day 5 times a week (More optimal results when combined with a 1200 calorie healthy diet). I have included Burpee’s which I hate and never do! Also included squat jumps if you want to eliminate a run or two through the week. You can get your cardio in, if you do reps of those. I skip this I would rather run… Like I said I hate burpee’s.

I know you can spare 30 minutes, maybe give up that 30 minutes you use for social media before work and do this instead. So lets get started… By the way I lost 25 lbs. Using these exercises and a 1200 calorie (Ovolactoveg. diet) it can be any low fat 1200 cal diet.***** Remember check with your health care provider before starting any new diet*****I measure my food now, chew slower, drink water before I eat, and after, no snacking but I eat 3 times a day. I never skip meals  and I stay around the 1200 mark nothing less because this leads to blood sugar drops and sends the body into a fight or flight because it thinks we are starving…! Stay away from starchy, sugary, fried, foods. Fill your diet with robust , colorful vegi’s, if you drink milk and eat eggs make sure they are hormone free and antibiotic free. I like almond milk and vegetarian fed eggs. If you are meat eater chose meats that are grass-fed, antibiotic free, hormone free.

Lets begin.. Warm up Mommy. grab that yoga matt or exercise matt and lets get started.

5 Minute warm up:**** (If you don’t know how to do these scroll down there will be pictures to help guide you.)******

30 Seconds of push ups (can be modified push ups as well)

1 minute of burpee’s/squat jumps (I hate burpee’s!) So I do squat jumps

1 minute of downward dog and planks

1 minute of burpee’s/squat jumps (I hate burpee’s!) So I do squat jumps! yes this again….

30 Seconds of push up’s either kind

1 minute of lunges

Now we are ready! 25 minutes and we are done!

Rest when needed.**** And remember check with your health care provider before starting any new exercise program.****

  1. Planks rotating right hand/ left hand 2-5 minutes

Final Thoughts from Simply Mommy:

Once you have this down.. its a breeze. 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week, 1200 calories, and much healthier, fit, and happy. It is a small sacrifice to a happier you. This will increase energy, lighten your mood, relieve stress, while losing weight and finding something that is just for you.. Again as with any thing before starting any new exercise regimen and or new diet consult your health care provider prior.

When Happy just won’t happen…..

dream We all get into ruts, we even have a couple of days when it feels like your whole world has fallen apart. But typically we drag our selves up by our boot straps and carry on. Then there are other times when those blues turn into… a dark lingering hole we can’t find our way out. Maybe you can’t put your finger on how this happen, you woke up one day and you were depressed, or you had life altering changes that caused the depression.. Depression is like this:

Daily tasks start to be so hard. Starting with getting out of the bed, even that is hard, getting work done, our chores done, the kids and husband/ wife, shopping… it just gets so overwhelming that you just want to return to bed and pull the covers back over your head and stay there. Then when you can’t get these things done, then it makes you more depressed. So when things start to get like this, this is not your typical blues it is depression. It is a nasty word no one likes to talk about, but awareness is key in a diagnosis. There are all types of depression and treatment options. But none will work if you don’t get diagnosed and follow your plan… Even.. heaven forbid.. MEDICATION>….

No one likes to admit they need help, especially help from medication to treat depression. But before we get into medicinal treatments… You guessed it.. let’s try a more holistic natural approach. ****Note if you are having thoughts of suicide don’t wait go to the doctor…******* But if you are not having suicidal thoughts you can start a holistic approach to dealing with depression.

Starting with getting up, dressing up, and showing up!! Yes get your but out of bed even if you feel like you been dragged by a Mack truck. Shower, dress and put on clothes! You heard me get out of those pj’s. Now walk to the bed… STRIP IT! yes i said strip it, that way it is naked and you wont be tempted to jump back in.. put it in the washer.

Nutrition and diet:

I recommend a complex Vit. B. Also you may need to add some Vit. D which can be found in your local SUN.. go outside… you can also use a supplement. Now more you need a multi vitamin, cod liver oil, probiotics, and raw enzymes. St. johns wart is also help ful in fighting the blues. Your diet should stay organic eating plenty of dark, colorful robust vegi’s. If you eat meat of course choose antibiotic free, and hormone free. Eggs and milk same… Steer clear of sugars and caffeine as these can cause spikes in blood sugar and make you feel good and then crash and burn. I love hot tea… herbal is so good. Try a cozy chamomile … to brighten your mood.

Meditation and Yoga:

I love my yoga matt, many hours have been spent working out stress and other negative energy. It is a spiritual thing for me.

Exercise:

start a program and stick with it starting with at least 30 minutes a day then increase as you feel better. 

Counseling:

Talk to someone, get your issues resolved, you may not even understand what is wrong untill you start hashing it out.. It can be a professional or a spiritual advisor.

If symptoms don’t subside you need to contact your provider. It is quiet possible you will need medication. I have explored a few in this article and this is how they stack up against each other.

Prozac: Once a prozac nation, we have all simply heard this fade away. It however is still used.  This is how it works. Prozac  is in a class called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). The well-knownFluoxetine (Prozac) is a member of this class. SSRIs work on the serotonin balance by inhibiting a transporter called SERT that selectively pumps serotonin back into the neuron. Also in this class is Celexa, Lexapro, Paxil. 

The other classes are:

  • Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) include amitriptyline (Elavil),desipramine (Norpramin), nortriptyline (Pamelor), and imipramine(Tofranil). Like reuptake inhibitors, tricyclics seem to block the reabsorption of serotonin and epinephrine back into nerve cells after these chemicals are released into a synapse. Because of the potential side effects, your doctor might periodically check yourblood pressure, request an EKG, or recommend occasional bloodtests to monitor the level of tricyclics in your system. These medicines might not be safe for people with certain heart rhythm problems.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) include Emsam, Marplan,Nardil, and Parnate. These drugs seem to work a little differently. Monoamine oxidase is a natural enzyme that breaks down serotonin, epinephrine, and dopamine. MAOIs block the effects of this enzyme. As a result, the levels of those neurotransmitters might get a boost.
The downside is that MAOIs also prevent the body’s ability to break down other medicines metabolized by this enzyme (such as Sudafed, or stimulants) — raising the risk for high blood pressure — as well as an amino acid called tyrosine, which is found in certain foods like aged meats and cheeses. MAOIs also shouldn’t be combined with other medicines that can raise serotonin (such as certain migrainemedicines, or other antidepressants), because that can cause a buildup of excessive serotonin (called “serotonin syndrome“), which could be life threatening. So now let me tell you about this pill my friends have told me about.. now don’t know how much of this is true, but they swear by it. Okay I am just gonna say it …it is called the “happy, skinny, sexual enhancing Pill”  yes, you are supposed to get happy, have lots of sex and drop tons of weight …..yes sound like a miracle. Now I don’t know it for the truth except that I am a nurse and when I give medication the females at least didn’t care if any pill was in their cup except … Wellbutrin.. it is supposed to be amazing. Like I said talk to your provider and they will prescribe what is best for you.
